In this book – the second in the Tangata Whenua series – students will explore New Zealand’s past in the context of classical Maori culture and first contact with Europeans. These took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and had a strong influence on later events such as the Treaty of Waitangi. The events and consequences of these interactions form essential learning about New Zealand’s heritage and culture, both in the past and for the future. Students will gain a deeper understanding of New Zealand’s cultural dynamics.
