About the book: For courses in database management.

Database Concepts offers students practical help creating and managing small databases, from two of the world’s leading database authorities. The text focuses on database concepts, rather than features and functions of a particular product, making it flexible enough to work with the instructor’s preferred software. Data sets for three sample databases run throughout portions of the text so students can practice working with complete databases. Three running projects challenge learners to apply concepts and techniques to real business situations. In the 9th edition, Microsoft Office 2019, and particularly Microsoft Access 2019, is now the basic software used and is shown running on Microsoft Windows 10.

Features & benefits
  • The structure of the text has been reorganised to place more emphasis on the essential concepts of databases and their use, and on the newest developments in Business Intelligence (BI) Systems, Cloud Computing, Big Data, and non-relational (NoSQL) databases. Much material previously found in online appendices has been reintegrated into the text itself or reorganised into one of three online Extensions.
  • A short introduction to physical database design and related considerations has been added to Chapter 6 (“Database Administration”), along with an example of using MySQL database security using roles.
  • Updated material on cloud computing, virtualisation using containers, and the new Hadoop processing model is now in Chapter 7.
  • The section in each chapter previously called “The Access Workbench” has been reorganised as “Working with Microsoft Access.” It now integrates material on using Microsoft Visio™ 2016 for data modeling and database design.
  • DBMS software coverage has been updated to include MySQL 8.0 Community Server and MySQL Workbench 8.0. MySQL is now the example DBMS used throughout the text (instead of Microsoft SQL Server), and all SQL output in the text is shown as displayed in MySQL Workbench.
  • Detailed coverage of MySQL is in the online Extension “Working with MySQL,” which now includes coverage equivalent to “Working with Microsoft Access.” There is a separate section of “Working with MySQL” for each chapter in the text, so that work on MySQL can be done in conjunction with the topics covered in the text.
  • Critical thinking projects present illustrative cases and require students to consider how they would manage the data for three types of businesses — a gardening service, a jewelry store, and a retail business.
  • Case questions prompt students to consider the relevance of data and data management to real-world cases.
  • Review questions and exercises are included at the end of each chapter.
